It's highly toxic to insects, affecting their nervous system as they eat or touch the substance. After contact or ingestion, the insects' muscles flex uncontrollably. This reaction leads to total paralysis and then death within one or two days. Though spinosad kills various insects, it is low in toxicity to humans and most other mammals.
